Salon de Mimi - An exercise in local branding.

One of the first people I met after moving to Japan was my wonderful hairdresser, Sayaka.

We became good friends over the following months, and Sayaka eventually decided she wanted the best of both worlds - to continue working in a salon while at the same time being able to be the primary caregiver for her young boy.

Sayaka asked me to come up with an identity and some accompanying imagery she could use to promote her business. Her requirements were very different to most: non-attention grabbing, easy to understand and easy for her to replicate the logo in different art forms.

When Sayaka took me to her humble home which was in the process of being constructed - she let me take a look at her customisation of the front verandah - a set of reclaimed terracotta roof tiles from France. I began concepting and iterating on the roof tiles becoming the design of the logo itself, a unique character which fits her brief perfectly.

She loved it. "Thank you and your wife so much for today!! I love the logo so much - and so does my husband. Your pumpkin soup is really good too! 😄"

Yes, she HAND PAINTED the logo onto her outdoor sign, and created a custom stamp to be used on her small gift bags for clients.

Congratulations Sayaka - and thanks for choosing me!
